Heights of Inspiration
— Presentation by Edwin Bernbaum

From the Himalayas to the Sierra Nevada, people around the
world look up to mountains as sources of renewal, wisdom,
creativity and vision. Using a blend of images, music, quotes,
stories and personal experiences and reflections, Edwin Bernbaum
explored the many diverse ways in which sages, leaders, poets,
writers, artists and climbers, both Western and Eastern, have
drawn inspiration from the heights. The presentation drew on the
lives and works of such major figures as Moses, the Tibetan yogi Milarepa, Martin Luther King Jr., the Latin American liberator
Simon Bolivar, Percy Bysshe Shelley, the Chinese poet Li Po,
Ernest Hemingway, the Japanese painter Hokusai, Paul Cezanne,
George Mallory, Maurice Herzog and John Muir. Evocative slides
link these figures to mountains around the world, including Mount
Sinai in the Middle East; Mont Blanc in the Alps; Kilimanjaro in
Africa; Kailas, Annapurna and Everest in the Himalayas; Chimborazo
in the Andes; Mount Fuji in Japan; and the Sierra Nevada and the
Rocky Mountains in North America. This fascinating cross-cultural
exploration of some of the most beautiful and uplifting places on
Earth helps us to tap similar sources of inspiration and renewal
in our own lives — places of inner experience that have
the power to transform our views of ourselves and the world around
us.
