Epic of Everest, 1924
Captain John Noel was the official cinematographer on Mallory
and Irvine’s ill-fated 1924 summit attempt on Mount Everest.
Captain Noel was the last to hear from Mallory before his
disappearance, through a letter describing the location from
which he could best view their summit attempt. An excerpt from
his critically acclaimed 1924 silent film Epic of Everest
was be presented by his daughter, Sandra Noel. The rarely seen
footage begins with the blessing at Rongbuk Monastery, charts
the progress of the climbers and ends with an image of the
commemorative cairn.
Even after the discovery of Mallory’s body in 1999, the
fascinated speculation on the success or failure of the two
climbers continues. This film helps us see this famous story as
it was experienced by those present.
