Nordwand (The North Face)
Germany, 2008, 121 minutes
Directed by Philipp Stölzl
Produced by Danny Krausz, Boris Schönfelder
Germany, summer 1936: Childhood friends and passionate climbers Toni Kurz and Andi Hinterstoisser are particularly attracted to one mountain — the Eiger. Its north face, also known as “the death face”, has not yet been conquered. If they succeed, they stand to gain not only the social recognition they yearn for, but also Olympic gold. During their preparations, they encounter Luise, Kurz’s childhood sweetheart, who has been sent to report on the conquest of the mountain with fellow journalist Arau, a Nazi follower. Once on the face, the two climbers are pursued and then joined by Austrians Willy Angerer and Edi Rainer. From the Grand Hotel at the foot of the Eiger, the four men are being watched with telescopes by enthusiastic crowds and the world press. At first the climb goes well. Then the weather changes and Angerer is injured. A race against time and the forces of nature is set in motion. This grippingly staged mountain film boasts plenty of white-knuckle thrills. Based on true events, Nordwand dramatizes the story featured in the 2007 film The Beckoning Silence, which was based on the book by Joe Simpson (also author of Touching the Void). In German with English subtitles.
