Rock climbers have an inherent interest in geology. For some, it’s about knowing what gear to use or how to avoid rotten bands of rock. Sarah Garlick takes it a step further. An accomplished climber with a master’s degree in structural geology and tectonics from the University of Wyoming, Garlick has just published the first basic geology book specifically written for climbers. Called Flakes, Jugs, and Splitters: A Rock Climber’s Guide to Geology, it explores the why and where.of geological formations and the nature of rock.
Why is there no rock climbing in Florida? Could the volcanic Mount Kilimanjaro blow? Why does Europe have so much limestone? Garlick delves into the origins of mountains and crags, explaining why certain rock formations built up where they did, and how it affects the climbing in the area. It includes information on using a geological map, and tips on finding new routes, and even goes into the history of naming on popular crags. User-friendly and filled with sleek photographs from climbing destinations around the world, this handbook answers all the most common questions a climber could have about the source of the sport.
Garlick has spent over 11 years climbing all types of geologic terrain, from granite big walls and sandstone towers to eroded volcanic necks and glacial erratic boulders. Based in North Conway, NH, Garlick is the founder and director of The Geoscience Outreach Foundation, a nonprofit consulting group that develops science education projects for public audiences. In addition to her master’s she has a bachelor’s degree in geology from Brown University and serves as an editor for the scientific journal Rocky Mountain Geology. She has also contributed to publications including Rock and Ice, Urban Climber, Alpinist, and Patagonia. She was a participant in the 2008 Banff Mountain Writing Program.
