Poster Title: Women’s
vulnerability to debris flow hazard: The case of Haldi, Karakoram
Himalaya
Poster Abstract: The
poster examines the social construction of women’s vulnerability
to debris flow hazard in the high mountain community of Haldi,
Baltistan. Women’s vulnerability results from everyday
conditions of life and livelihood in the community. Specifically,
the gendered division of labour, space and influence that arise
from religious and cultural beliefs limits women’s mobility,
access to information, and decision-making potential. This
condition is extended and aggravated in the event of disaster,
posing impediments to women’s survival and recovery. The recent
introduction of the cash economy is altering the forms and social
distribution of risks in the community, to women’s disadvantage.
