Air issues in Canadian Mountain Parks.
Author: David

Abstract: In 1998 and 2001, a questionnaire was
addressed to all 39 Canadian national parks that provided a
comprehensive picture of air issues, their monitoring and
research, related interpretive programmes, and management
recognition. The principal air issues affecting the 17 mountain
national parks are climate change, long range transport of
undifferentiated air pollutants, local air pollution sources, and
UV-B radiation increases. Unlike lowland parks, deposition of
acids and specific toxics are not rated highly as issues.
Protected area managers can do little to address such issues at
source, but must consider ways to adapt to those issues. They can
also play outreach, advocacy, research support and demonstration
roles. They may be able to address local air issues revealed by
the questionnaires such
as industrial emissions, smoke and
odour from landfills, vehicle exhaust from town sites and through
traffic, biomass burning, smog, and community heating and power
generation.
