Paula Banks
Paula has been with Lands and Resources since1996,
working on diverse projects that are part of Champagne
and Aishihik First Nation’s increased responsibilities
under their land claim: everything from salmon stream
enhancement to database/GIS development. She helped the
First Nation combine conventional science and
traditional knowledge to contest the relicensing of a
hydroelectric dam and gain a water licence that was more
responsive to the environment and the people who depend
on it. She currently works for the First Nation on the
Yukon Environmental and Socioeconomic Assessment Act, a
product of land claims that will largely displace the
Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) in the
Yukon. Her eclectic resume includes tours of duty as a
botany technician and in health care public relations,
all skills she has used as part of a northern First
Nations government.
