A Journey in the History of Water - The Struggle (Norway, 2002, 50 min)
Production Company: University of Bergen - Centre for Development Studies & Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation
Director: Terje Dale
FILM REPRESENTIVE IN PERSON: Bjørn Enge Bertelsen
This series tells the dramatic story of how the struggle for fresh water has shaped human society in profound ways since the dawn of civilization.
In "The Struggle", we see a Himalayan expanse of sterile rock that has been transformed into an oasis. In Ethiopia we see the Borana people
manually draw water from deep, hidden wells, just as they have been doing for 300,000 years. Ancient traditions are compared to modern
sophisticated irrigation techniques employed by California farmers. Methods may change, but the issues remain the same.
Natural World: My Halcyon River (UK, 2001, 49 min)
Production Company: BBC Natural History Unit
Director/Producer: Charlie Hamilton-James
Producer: Philippa Forrester
An idyllic British river: misty dawns, dancing mayflies, lazy trout and fluffy chicks paddling under the watchful gaze of their parents. It sounds idyllic
but in fact this film packs in more drama, tragedy, intrigue and heroism than would at first be imagined. Beautifully filmed and full of humour.
Troubled Waters (USA, 2003,52 min)
Production Company: Gage & Gage Productions
Producer/Director: Beth Gage and George Gage
Personal, passionate and controversial, "Troubled Waters" looks at
the dilemma of dams. Many of the 75,000 to 2,500,000 dams in the U.S.
have outlived their usefulness. With a variety of media, this video
demonstrates that dams divorce a river from its ecosystem, thereby
destroying biodiversity and riparian habitat. Exploring
environmental, cultural, economic and spiritual arguments for and
against decommissioning dams, the film considers, via a multitude of
voices, the worth of a dam where commerce is served but nature
destroyed.
